Patty Olosky is a Partner in the Hartford, Connecticut office of Shipman & Goodwin LLP. Her practice focuses on patent law, where she advises clients on securing U.S. plant patents for new agricultural varieties, along with U.S. plant variety protection certificates and corresponding foreign plant protections. In addition to her patent work, Patty has broad experience across other areas of intellectual property, with particular emphasis on trademark protection and enforcement, as well as copyright and domain name matters.
Patty counsels clients through every phase of the brand lifecycle, from trademark clearance through registration and maintenance, both domestically and internationally. In addition, she assists clients in enforcing and defending IP rights before the U.S. Trademark Trial & Appeal Board and its foreign counterparts. Patty also has extensive experience with commercial transactions involving IP rights, from negotiating agreements with employees, independent contractors, and prospective business collaborators, to advising buyers and sellers on IP issues in the course of mergers, acquisitions, and other corporate and financial transactions.
Having represented clients ranging from individuals and start-ups to global and Fortune 500 corporations that span a wide variety of industries—such as the dietary supplement, apparel, baby product, food and beverage, rail transportation, raw manufacturing materials, biomedical, computer science, and beauty industries —Patty does not believe in a “one size fits all” IP strategy. Rather, by understanding each client’s current and future needs, she provides legal advice tailored to help each client achieve its specific, individualized goals.
Patty earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 2002, having previously obtained a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Pittsburgh, graduating cum laude in 1999. She is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, both since 2002, and was admitted to the Connecticut bar in 2025.
Patty is actively involved in the intellectual property community and has held several leadership and advisory roles, including serving as a member of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Plant Variety Protection Board from 2020 to 2024 and as President of the Pittsburgh Intellectual Property Law Association from 2018 to 2019. Patty is a member of the International Trademark Association (INTA) and has strong relationships with attorneys throughout the world in order to serve her clients wherever their businesses may take them.
“Patty is a highly respected intellectual property attorney, widely regarded for her leadership in patent and trademark matters and her ability to deliver clear, strategic guidance tailored to complex business needs.”
